What matters to broiler production with lighting?
The light climate consists of the photoperiod, the light intensity, the light spectrum, the light distribution and the light source. Getting all these factors right will help create an optimal and excellent light climate which will definitely help better broiler production and improve animal welfare.
▎The Photoperiod & The Light Intensity
For brooding period, the optimal day length for broilers is between 17-20 hrs of light. For growth-out period, 17-18 hrs of light is recommended. A longer photoperiod will increase mortality and the electricity bill, while a shorter photoperiod will decrease their growth.
At least 40lux is recommended to help chicks to find water and feed during the brooding period, while during grow-out period, the light intensity can be decreased till 5-10lux.
▎The Light Spectrum
Broiler requires more red light spectrum during the brooding period for better early growth, while during the grow-out period, more blue light spectrum is needed to increase their growth. Broiler reared under green monochromatic light develop faster during early phase due to proliferation of skeletal muscle satellite cells. ▎The Light Distribution
The light distribution is one of another factors that is often overvalued in poultry management. An optimal light distribution is crucial for poultry production and animal welfare.
Bad light distribution may cause a poor spread of broilers that possibly causes clustering. The clustering will increase competition for food and water, lead to a bad bird heat distribution, which will raise heating costs. Good light distribution will decrease mortality, increase animal welfare and uniform growth.
